This was my friend, Gilberto's 1988 2.3L Coupe; Project Hermes. He was contemplating on whether he should spend money on rebuilding the 2.3 or find a used 5.0 and really make some noise. Well, he had decided to convert it to a 5.0 and agreed to let the Registry document the transplant. However, Gilberto has recently purchased a '91 5.0 LX convertible and decided to sell the coupe and donor cars. Well, I have purchased them and the project has taken on some new objectives.
Gilberto bought this coupe around April of this year (1996) for $1,500. We were attracted to this car because of its surprising originality. This is a well-worn 1988 2.3L Mustang with all of its original parts; a good basis for a project car. The body is straight with no undercarriage damage. The fenders, hood, trunk, doors, and body carry the original Ford VIN stickers. There are very few door dings and most parts are in good working condition.
Now on to the trouble areas. The paint is faded and is full of chips. The passenger's side front fender has a small dent and a few holes from where it was pulled out. The interior is faded, the driver's door handle is broken, and the passenger's side door lock switch does not work. Also, the heater core has a small leak. The engine and transmission run good but that's a moot point since they will be replaced with the 5.0 drivetrain.
